Whether I stalk or still hunt

or simply walk, I take with me

these guidesold Black Belly,

whose steps are slow,

and the split seed that opened

for me the root of glad

and glade, a shimmering space

that spills here and there

among the trees. I also call

to mind a young Vietnamese

who walked into my life

with a sunflower on its long stalk

as his walking stick, who taught me

to count and to breathe

so that within each step a fresh

breeze rose. I'd go alone,

but my solitude spins me

in circlesI read compass

and moss and the wind all wrong.

Rivers seem to flow backward,

known outcroppings fade. I lose

my bearings, pressing into

the illusion of getting there

somewhere, anywhere

on the long way up the tangled

ridge toward sun and open rock.
